32nd and Final Home/School Connection
June 14, 2012
- SHEEP’S EYE DISSECTION: This week you finished the optics unit on a very positive note with the successful completion of a sheep eye dissection. To prepare for the dissection, you were introduced to the different parts of the eye; you filled in a diagram and watched a Brain Pop video. Name three parts of the eye and bonus points if you can also describe their function and/or location. On Wednesday, you read a short article from Kids Health about your eyes and then completed a sheep eye dissection with a partner. 5SFN was very lucky to have Ms. Hawkins help with the dissection. During the dissection, you were engaged, respectful, and scientific. What did you think the dissection would be like? After dissecting the sheep eye, were your predictions correct or was the dissection different than you predicted. Share how it went, what you learned, what surprised you and what you would like to know more about.
- FINISHING YOUR ALMANACS: You have typed up your almanac pages and are in the midst of designing the front and back cover. On Friday, you will spend time writing what you appreciate about everyone in 5SFN inside their almanacs. How hard or easy has it been to think of what you appreciate about each person in our class? What do you think people might say about you? Let your parent know some of what you wrote on your almanac page.
- PEER PRESSURE and INTRO to ADOLESCENCE: This week we learned about different forms of pressures you face including peer pressures. You got a list of ways people might peer pressure you – show your parents this list and ways to handle these pressures. You designed a skit with a few peers and performed it for our class. What did you learn from thinking about the different ways people can pressure you and what techniques you might use in the future if it happens to you.
- DREAM HOUSE: Your dream houses are done or almost done. What aspect of your dream house do you think is the most interesting? What did you have to learn how to do (math or design) in order to create the dream house you wanted?
- ‘WHAT KIDS WANT TO KNOW..." MOVIE: We (your teachers) have been so impressed with the way you have approached the intro to adolescence material. This week we watched the movie called, What Kids Want To Know about Sex and Growing Up. As you know, it’s made by the same group that produced Sesame Street. After the movie you had a chance to go into groups of all boys or girls to ask questions. What parts of the movie do you think were good for you to learn about? How was it for you to talk in a small group after? Besides a parent, whom might you talk to about questions you might have in the future?
- END OF THE YEAR MATH ASSESSMENT (EOYA): While reviewing, what types of problems did you most need to practice? What types of math do you most like or feel you have improved upon?
- SUMMER READING: Ms. Neale introduced you to the summer reading packet/envelope you are taking home. Go through the packet with your parent. Show him or her the Mass. Children’s Book Award Nominees. Begin to make plans for the books you might read over the summer. Is there one you and your dad or mom might want to read too? What books did your peers recommend to you today? What book do you know you already want to read? _____________________________
- ENDINGS: Our year is almost over. How is this for you? What are some of your best memories? What do you think you learned about yourself or about what it takes to be a good classmate or student this year? Is there anything else you feel good about or that you hope will happen next year? I (Ms. Stark) would love it if you would email me some notes this summer to keep me up-to-date with what you have been up to or thinking about. Maybe on Tuesdays, you could send me some news to continue our Tuesday Newsdays…

31st Home/School Connection
June 8, 2012
The theme of this HSC is: What’s your story? As you know, you can have 25 students do the same thing and you might hear 25 different stories about how it went. As you talk about the events from last week, stay aware of what is objective (factual) and what is subjective (your story) of what happened.

HERE is the Home/School Connection for the last week of May. 5SFN HSC #29 5.24.12.
- POINTS DAY! Before we started the day, I (Ms. Stark) reminded you that it was more important to have fun and enjoy yourself than to be right. Explain why you think I reviewed that with the class. How do you think our class did with that? Next, describe what we did – Kickball, Water Play, Return of The Titans, Richie’s, More Return of the Titans, Clean up and final game of Capture the Flag. Then talk about how you experienced what we did. Did you have fun? Do you think it was a good way to use our class points? Why is that?
- FARM SCHOOL: If you were on the trip, go over the schedule on the next page and the website pictures. Then, using your five senses, describe what it was like to be there. What do you think you will most remember when you are an adult looking back? Think about the smells, sights, and feelings you had. If you were not at Farm School, you could talk about what you did instead of Farm School. What were some memorable or good parts? Is there something you made or did that you might share with the class?
- ALMANAC PROVERBS: If you did not yet review them with your parent, discuss them now. They are attached. Review the ones you like and ones you don’t completely understand. Each of you should pick the one you most like or think is useful.
